THAT TOO I AM

My work, my journey, began in the great turmoil that was America in the late 1960's. Woodstock, anti-war demonstrations, Eastern mysticism and spiritual teachings were early influences that formed the core of my spiritual/political coming of age. From Woodstock came the return to the Sacred Earth and the art of creating peace in the midst of conflict. From the anti-war movement came the gift of life's purpose, a sense of destiny and a vision of future possibilities. And from Eastern mystical practices came a consciousness of Truth, a knowledge of the Divine and an experience of the eternal. All these gifts became vital tools for surviving that era in history, an era not so different from our present time.

A devotion to the Sacred Earth, a vision of a future world of peace and unity, and the knowledge that Spirit is working through us all, are at the core of my work as a ceremonialist, a body worker and now, again, anti-war activist. For me the spiritual and the political have always been joined by the yoga of awareness. It is an awareness of what we are as divine beings on the planet, who we are as hearts lost in webs of maya, and who we are as reflections in the endless mirror of expression called the 'dance of life.' It is through recognizing oneself in the reflection of one's enemy that we learn compassion. At the moment of this recognition we hear ourselves say, "That too I am."

This phenomenon of seeing our hidden or buried traits reflected in the expressions of others was spoken of by C. G. Jung as the workings of the shadow self coming into the light. And again in the poetry of Thich Nhat Hanh. To change the evil we see we must first take responsibility for that part of the whole which we possess - not with guilt and self-recrimination - but with awareness and compassion. And so with an awareness of the Sacred Earth, the sacred nature of our journey and the Spirit of compassion all things become possible as we work to bring the darkness into the light.

May the Earth Prevail!
